You Don’t Have To Do This Alone

The quiet power of community for beginner and returning runners

When you’re just starting out—or starting over—it’s easy to feel like you’re the only one out there.

You’re walking or running at a pace that feels miles behind everyone else. You’re second-guessing your ability, your body, and whether you even belong out there. And most of all, you’re wondering if anyone else has ever felt this unsure, this slow, or this out of place.

But here’s the truth:

You don’t have to do this alone.

My early running days were mostly solo—but not unsupported

When I first started running, I was nervous.

I didn’t know if I was doing it right. I didn’t feel fit. And I certainly didn’t look like the people I saw in running magazines.

But I wasn’t completely on my own. I had the quiet support of a few family members and close friends. Just enough encouragement. Just enough accountability. Just enough “eyeballs” on me to keep me showing up, even when I didn’t feel like it.

It wasn’t loud or public—but it mattered.

Later, after completing my first marathon, I found something even more powerful:

the online running community.

And that changed everything.

Running is personal. But it doesn’t have to be lonely.

Yes, the act of running is solitary. It’s you, your breath, your feet, and the road.

But community changes how that feels.

It’s the difference between pushing through a hard day alone, and getting a message that says:

“You’ve got this.”

“Me too.”

“Keep going—I’m right there with you.”

Being part of a supportive running community doesn’t mean giving up your independence.

It means gaining strength, perspective, and motivation from others who get it.

What community gave me (and still does)

When I became part of an online running group, I started learning things I wish I’d known sooner:

  • What actually works (and what’s just a marketing myth)
  • What to ignore (because it doesn’t apply to slow or new runners)
  • That you don’t need to be fast, fit, or “look the part” to be a real runner
  • That every pace, every shape, and every story matters

And I also found something I hadn’t realised I was missing:

circle of quiet cheerleaders.

People who had been where I was.

People who didn’t judge.

People who reminded me: “You belong here.”

That’s why Runners Gateway exists

This community was built on everything I’ve learned—through experience, mistakes, and moments of doubt.

Runners Gateway is here for the people who feel too slow, too overweight, too inconsistent, too “not-a-runner”…

and it’s here to show you that you’re not alone.

We’re not about hype.

We’re not about pressure.

We’re not about performance.

We’re about showing up.

We’re about finding joy in movement.

We’re about steady, doable progress—together.

You’re invited. Exactly as you are.

Whether you’re walking, run-walking, or returning after a long break…

you belong in this community.

Not because you’ve hit a certain pace.

Not because you’ve run a certain distance.

But because you had the courage to begin.

And that’s worth celebrating.

So this week, consider taking one small step into community:

  • Say hi in our community
  • Comment on someone’s win (or their wobble)
  • Share your own story—no matter how small it feels

Or if you’re not ready for that yet, just know:

You’ve got people in your corner. We’re already cheering for you.

You don’t have to do this alone.

That’s the beauty of it.

We were never meant to.
