You Don’t Need Fancy Gear to Be a Runner

Let’s get this out of the way early: you do not need to spend hundreds of dollars on running gear to get started. You don’t need the latest tech, flashy shoes, or colour-coordinated outfits. You don’t need leggings that cost more than your weekly groceries or a top with built-in UV protection and seventeen different pockets.

What you do need? A bit of motivation, something comfortable to wear, and the belief that showing up matters more than what you’re wearing when you do.

Forget the Hype

There’s a whole industry out there trying to convince you that you need to “look like a runner” before you can start acting like one. It’s no wonder so many people feel intimidated. If you’re scrolling Instagram and everyone looks like a sportswear model with GPS watches, compression socks, and earbuds that cost more than your rent… it’s easy to feel like you’re not ready yet.

But you are.

That old pair of shorts in the drawer? They’re fine.
A cotton T-shirt? That’ll do.
Trainers that feel good on your feet? Perfect.

Running isn’t about the gear. It’s about you. Moving. Breathing. Showing up.

Start With Comfort

Here’s what actually matters:

  • Shoes that feel supportive. They don’t have to be top-of-the-line, but they should feel good when you walk. If you can, get fitted at a local shop, but don’t stress if that’s out of budget. Comfort over brand name, every time.
  • Clothes that don’t distract you. Loose, breathable, and comfortable. That’s it. Something you’re happy to move in. Something that makes you feel like you – not like you’re dressing up as someone else.
  • A sports bra that supports you. For women, this can be a game-changer. Again, it doesn’t have to be expensive. Try on a few. Choose what feels best for your body.

That’s really all you need. And you probably already have it.

It’s Not a Fashion Show

Running doesn’t care what you look like. Your body doesn’t particularly run better in designer gear, especially in the early days. And trust me, nobody at the local park run is judging your outfit. Most of them are just trying to keep moving and breathe at the same time.

The truth is, some of the best runs happen in old T-shirts and last year’s trainers.

You don’t need to prove anything to anyone.

You’re allowed to start where you are, with what you’ve got.

Invest Later – IF You Want To

Later on, if you want to buy gear, great! Get that fancy hydration vest. Try out a running belt. Splurge on the shoes with the extra bounce. But only do it because it feels good to you, not because you think it makes you “more” of a runner.

Because you’re already a runner.

You earned that title the moment you decided to show up… even if you were walking, even if you were nervous, even if your shirt was from that free fun run back in 2013!

Your Gear Doesn’t Define You. Your Grit Does.

What makes someone a runner isn’t what’s on their feet or how sleek their top is. It’s that quiet, steady choice to put one foot in front of the other – even when it’s hard. Even when you don’t feel ready. Even when your outfit is more “laundry day” than “magazine spread.”

So next time you catch yourself thinking, “I’ll start once I get the right gear,” pause.

You already have what you need. You’re ready.

And if it helps, here’s your permission slip:

✔️ Old trainers

✔️ Baggy T-shirt

✔️ Bit of courage

✔️ A heart that wants to try

That’s all it takes.
